SAREX is an annual Search and Rescue exercise/training camp hosted by Cal-OES. Teams from all over the state come together to take classes, network and build community. For most of us it's a unique opportunity to compare notes with a variety of other teams and learn about the bigger picture of SAR practices in California.

This year the event took place in Plasse’s Resort near Kirkwood CA, giving all the participants a
chance to train in some challenging conditions that we often have to search
in: the Sierra mountains at 7,300ft with smoke choked air from the summer’s
devastating fires. BAMRU was not only in attendance for training,
but also sent an instructor, Matt Jacobs. He presented on the search management
software he’s developed, SARTopo, as well as his enlightening work
developing data driven search tactics.

SAREX classes varied in topic from a mantracking
course from an expert in the field, Fernando Moreira, to a behind the scenes
view of how Cal-OES operates. Another well attended highlight of the weekend
was the Air-Ops trainings. Helicopters are increasingly used for searching from
the air, transporting searchers to and from remote assignments, and of course
extracting those who need to be rescued. Having a chance to work in and around
helicopters without the intensity of an actual emergency is important to making
sure that searchers can operate in and alongside helicopters safely in the
field. After a safety briefing, participants were given a chance to be hoisted
and then transported in a Black Hawk helicopter.

Aside from the trainings, SAREX is an event where volunteers
from many different counties can catch up with old friends and make new ones. Sometimes that means sharing tips on how to best tie a knot, other times it may mean dancing late into the night at a camp site bedecked with a giant disco ball. The better we all know each other, the more effectively we can work together
the next time we meet at a search!

Most of BAMRU's trainings are big - 15-20 students and associated
instructors converge on an area and concentrate on sharpening skills in
a very focused and structured way. But another key part of our training
is the "Small Alpine Training Series", in which teams of 4-8 people
spend a weekend in high alpine terrain, practicing a wide range of
skills in the backcountry in a more unstructured way - but one that is
more like what we expect to experience on a backcountry search.

These are typically organized by a Trainee in concert with one of our
full Members; the Trainee is responsible for proposing the agenda,
recruiting attendees, acquiring the permit, planning the route and
activities, and managing logistics. Everyone on the team takes part in
the planning and execution - figuring out what skills to practice (or
get signoffs in), sharing gear, planning for food and water, and
managing comms, medical, navigation, and any required technical gear.

Unlike our regular training schedule, the Small Alpine schedule ebbs and
flows through the year as people's availability does. On a recent
weekend, we had two! One team visited the Yosemite backcountry,
executing a technical ascent of Starr King and an overnight bushwack.
The other team visited the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness, practicing map and
compass navigation off trail through dense woods while covering a good
bit of ground and the non-technical Three Sisters peak.

These small trainings give us a chance to better know our teammates and
how they operate in a small team and in the backcountry, as well as
swapping gear ideas and BAMRU lore.
Seven members volunteered to stay up all night to help ensure the safety and well being of the runners who had made it to that point of one of the most difficult 100 mile courses in the country.

The runners start in Squaw Valley, California and have a 30 hour cut off time to make it the grueling 100.2 miles to Placer High School in Auburn. Some years snow has altered the course, but this year heat was one of the main obstacles. Some of the valleys reached over 100 degrees on race day.

BAMRU's medical crew was responsible for assessing each runner as they passed through the station to make sure they weren't showing signs of what can be dangerous electrolyte imbalances. In addition, we also did a lot of shoe patching, blister care and basic first aid. We were prepared to run up or down the trail to assist any runner in need of aid and even prepared to perform carry outs or evacuations that required the use of our litter and wheel. Fortunately, none of the runners needed this kind of assistance.

We had a great night, met some wonderful volunteers and were inspired by the perseverance and endurance of the runners.
They suffered through rain, hail and gale, they suffered through poison oak, silly exercises, mock searches, night forays, a lengthy application and an intimidating interview process. Yet they stuck around uncomplaining, eager, helpful, gracious, enthusiastic, ready to put their outdoor skills to good use via Search and Rescue.

We are therefore proud to announce our new trainees:

Andrew Axley

Brooke Ezra Torf-Fulton

Tommy Ingulfsen

Natalie Larsen

Stefan Prost

Simone Schubert

Cara Silver

Every spring we select the best of the best to join our ranks. Trainee hopefuls have to attend two meetings and two guest friendly trainings including our SAR Basic weekend, they need to have acquired appropriate medical certifications and come with an extensive outdoor resume. This year we were fortunate to have seasoned SAR professionals from Sierra Madre and New Zealand join us as well. Welcome ALL!!!
We are also over the moon about the promotion of Lindsay Chromik to full fledged Field Member of BAMRU. Lindsay is a power house, a tour de force, SAR Wonder Woman. Accumulating the most participation hours of all members for the last couple of years, she is there everywhere, all the time, organizing, running things, planning things, generally making things happen. Promotion to field member is proud achievement for all of us, it takes much dedication, hard work and persistence. Congratulations Lindsay!!!!

On March 7 BAMRU members
woke up in beautiful Joshua Tree National Park to participate in this year's

location, weather, and problems couldn't have been better.

everyone get the last bit of drowsiness out of their system, and before BAMRU
knew it we were on our way to the first problem. Our subject was located on the
top of one side of a ravine, and while in otherwise good health, a lower leg
injury required their evacuation to the ravine floor and out to the trailhead.
An advance team quickly made their way to the subject to assess medical
condition, and to come up with a rigging plan while the remaining team members
unloaded the required gear.
rig a guiding line, which would allow BAMRU to lower the subject and litter
attendant to the ravine floor while keeping them suspended above the rock for
an easier descent. A rope was strung across the ravine, many anchors were built
and double-checked for strength and safety, and after a couple hours the system
was moving. The subject and attendant were safely lowered and the litter was
then carried out by waiting BAMRU members. From the time we opened our problem
envelope to the moment our two proctors called the end of the scenario took
four hours, almost to the second.
moment to eat, repack gear, and get ready for the second (and final) problem,
and then we were off! The second problem consisted of a stranded climber who
had dislodged a rock while rappelling and injured their ankle. When we arrived
at the bottom of the cliff we discovered a second party who had been struck by
the falling boulder. Priority was given to the injured party on the ground due to
the nature of their injuries and their medical condition, and after quickly
packaging the subject they were carried to the road by hand, while three BAMRU
members made their way to the cliff above the stranded climber to execute a
pick-off. One BAMRU member was lowered to the climber, where they tied the
climber into their rescue system, and then lowered to the ground without
incident.

BAMRU received high marks
from our evaluators and celebrated our performance with an excellent dinner
provided by Sierra Madre SAR and then conversation and relaxation late into the
evening. The next morning some members stayed behind to climb, while most piled
into vehicles and began the long drive back to the Bay Area.

BAMRU is proud to be associated with the San Mateo County's Sheriff's Office. We are just one of the many volunteer groups that work under the auspices of the Office of Emergency Services. Every year the Sheriff's Office graciously throws a party to honor all its volunteer members. We get treated to a lovely dinner, a performance by the honor guard and awards are passed out to especially notable individuals and volunteer groups.

At this year's event, Sheriff Monk, Sgt Gilletti, and Chris Co (just some of the fine individuals we work with) bestowed upon BAMRU the inaugural San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Volunteer Group of the Year Award for 2014. This recognition is a reflection of our dedication and effort in contributing 16,000+ hours of service this past year, strengthening numerous relationship with the utmost professionalism, thoughtfulness, and self awareness as well as our willingness to reach deep into harms way to help those in need.
The award was a complete surprise to all of us and we are honored to be the first team to receive it.

The plaque will be on permanent display at the Sheriff's Office after a brief tour.
Sometimes, whilst climbing, you may find yourself in a bit of a pickle. A situation that maybe you wish you weren't in and that may take some clever moves and exactly the right gear to get yourself out of it. Or perhaps you intended to end up where you are, but need some Macgyver type maneuvers to continue on in challenging terrain.

In the spirit of being prepared for a wide variety of circumstances, BAMRU members carry with them what we refer to as our Houdini kits. A combination of gear that can come in very handy if you find yourself unable to climb difficult section of rock, needing to tie off your belay, or pull someone out of a crevasse. Some of recommended items for a houdini kit are:

80 to 100 ft of 7-9mm perlon

simple climbing harness

few biners

few pieces of protection

rappel/belay device

rescue pulley

few slings

As with any gear, it is only helpful, if you know how to use it. If you climb regularly outside, we highly recommend taking a self rescue course by a certified guide. BAMRU team members recently had the opportunity to practice using their skills and their gear for a weekend at Castle Crags State Park. Some photos from the training and a write up are below.

On March 14, six BAMRU members headed north to the Castle Crags Wilderness, A rugged area of phenomenal granite spires set in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The goal: practice the use of our "Houdini Kit" -- a mountain rescuer's personal collection of rope, webbing, cord and other climbing gear likely to prove useful when navigating steep and unpredictable alpine terrain.

The hike in was made additionally strenuous due to the near total absence of water in the area in which we would be training -- we carried it in ourselves. One particularly masochistic member brought eight gallons of water in addition to a full climbing rack, 2 ropes and all his personal gear in one massive hall bag, primarily for the purposes of training for an upcoming adventure.

The team spent two full days practicing rapelling, ascending a rope, passing knots, building anchors, hauling gear using simple mechanical advantage systems, and navigating fourth and fifth class terrain. Day one culminated with a scramble/climb to the top of Castle Dome, with an amazing view of Mount Shasta in the background.

In the backcountry, it's pretty easy to find that you've gone from, say, an easy rock scramble to a much more challenging and potentially much riskier scenario. So, beyond the purely technical skills, the team also practiced personal and collective risk assessment, and discussed how social dynamics affect individual and group decision-making.
On Saturday March 1, 2014, BAMRU successfully completed the California Region
Mountain Rescue Association’s reaccreditation test in the discipline of search
management and tracking of lost person incidences. This is one of three required disciplines to be an accredited national Mountain Rescue Association team. The
other two disciplines are search and rescue in winter conditions and cliff
rescue environments. To pass this test, members of BAMRU had to demonstrate the
ability to perform a grid search, track a subject through varied terrain, use
an emergency locator transmitter (ELT), successfully treat our mock patient and
demonstrate proficiency in running a command post. <span style="color: #777777; font-family: "ArialMT","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-font-family: ArialMT;">

Twenty of BAMRU’s members and trainees attended the event,
including two who acted as test evaluators for other teams. All told, Placer
County Sheriff Office was host to over 200 Search and Rescue personnel from
over 20 different teams from across California. The day unfolded along with
receding storms along the American River in Auburn State Recreation Park.

The day started at zero dark thirty and our first task was to locate a downed aircraft by honing in on a signal from an
ELT. By driving to strategic locations
in the vicinity where the aircraft was last seen, field teams were able to use
the signal strength of the ELT receivers and take bearings in the direction of
the signals. The collected information was then radioed back to the command
post where the command staff collated all the field data and triangulated the
plane’s location and directed the rescuers to the scene of the simulated crash
site.

Next, the team carefully followed the tracks of the subject who was possibly injured and had wandered from the simulated crash site wreckage. Tracking involves using a keen eye to follow
sometimes very subtle signs that a subject may have left behind in order to
determine a direction of travel and find the missing person. Once found, the
condition of the patient was assessed and medical treatment provided.

Our medical scenario involved a subject with a head injury whose
condition was deteriorating and required urgent evacuation. BAMRU was responsible for managing the
patient, communicating the situation back to the command post, requesting
additional resources and evacuating the patient quickly but safely. Upon securing the patient into a litter
basket, the carry out to from the wilderness to a waiting ambulance at
trailhead went quickly and smoothly.

BAMRU ended the day with a grid search looking for evidence from a
crime scene scenario. No stranger to
this practice, the team combed through brush, grass, trees, shrubs and poison
oak for an hour long test in search of the missing items.

BAMRU would like to thank Placer County Sheriff’s Office for
hosting this event and for providing all of the volunteer patients. Thanks as
well to the evaluators of the event and the Auburn State Parks and Recreation
department for their support. Last but not least, we'd like to thank Marin County SAR for hosting a multi team training prior to the reaccreditation.

This is a long overdue post about two of our members who participated in Climber Appreciation days at Pinnacles National Park back in the fall. Thank you to Chris and Eszter for helping to keep our parks in good shape for us all to enjoy! You can find more information on participating in future events like this here.

Giving Tuesday?

You have heard of Black Friday. And you have also heard of Cyber Monday. And there is Giving Tuesday…

Giving Tuesday is the day to give back to our community by making a donation to the non-profit charitable organization of your choice. And a great choice is BAMRU – Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit. Check us out at http://www.razoo.com/story/Bamru. Make a donation – its easy and for a great cause. The life you save could be that of a child, an elder, or another member of the community in which you live.

Thanks for your support!

And share this with your family, friends, co-workers, persons standing next to you in line, your local grocery store clerk, your dentist, your auto-mechanic, and your wise professor. You get the picture – pass it on! Someone’s life may depend on it!

As you might already know, BAMRU is a volunteer, non-profit organization. We are funded by donations and member contributions. These funds go to support our operating costs, such as updating our rescue equipment.

Amazon has created a program called AmazonSmile. When you shop through AmazonSmile, you can choose to support BAMRU and we'll receive a percentage of all your purchases as a donation- and it doesn't cost you a single penny extra. Pretty awesome! You can support BAMRU just by making your usual purchases -- or doing your Christmas shopping. (Once you register, you'll want to shop from smile.amazon.com, but nothing else about the way you interact with Amazon will change.) Please consider clicking on the link below to register your account to support us.
On Saturday 11/9, two team members from BAMRU supervised an off-trail night scenario as part of a training for the SO Explorers' Post Academy. The scenario involved packaging a patient with a broken leg and using a low angle rope system to assist with carrying the patient up a gradual incline. Three teams rotated through the station, performed a brief search to locate the (responsive) patient, and then packaged and carried out the patient. The teams all got the chance to run the low angle system.
This was a great opportunity to assist another group within our local SAR community. We are grateful to the Explorers' Post for inviting us to their training and are looking forward to working with them in the future.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6128685521310241558.post-69010688631596848612013-11-15T11:00:00.000-08:002013-11-26T18:20:46.312-08:00Woodside Search

BAMRU held its annual medical skills training in Huddart Park on October 26-27. Lucas Marciniak, a BAMRU technical member and registered nurse, organized a day of lectures and breakout sessions, followed by a day of awesome scenarios we called the “Medical Olympics”. Twenty-three active BAMRU members showed up, along with five guests and a handful of BAMRU's friends.

Day 1 started out with a fascinating lecture by Dr. Zina Semenovskaya, on wilderness medicine. The group discussed the unique risks associated with environmental exposure, and spent a lot of time deliberating sticky questions about acute mountain sickness (AMS): How do you recognize it in the field? When do you make a decision for search teams to descend? What are early warning signs for the life-threatening forms of AMS?

The team then split up into groups by certification level (EMT, WFR, WFA/First Aid), and began rotating through stations manned by knowledgeable BAMRU members. RN Abi Fitzgerald educated first responders and EMTs alike on the value of taking good baseline vital signs and an accurate medical history. Kyle Barbour walked each group through the contents of BAMRU’s jump bags - no one wants to be searching for the right piece of equipment in an emergency! Former BAMRU member and practicing anesthesiologist Dr. Victor Tubbesing mediated a discussion on patient medical scenarios and airway management, and Lucas Marciniak drilled the teams in how to properly package patients with cervical spine immobilization.

At the close of the day’s training, some of the group headed home while others camped at Huddart Park (and, after contemplating a dinner of dehydrated food, made a late-night taqueria run instead).

Day 2, the Medical Olympics, began with the creation of mixed certification level teams. Friends of BAMRU as well as some generous paramedic students from Foothill College volunteered to act as patients for the Med Olympics scenarios.

Each team had a full day of patient care! The training scenarios included a hiker with a broken ankle who was having an anaphylactic reaction to a bee sting; a teenager, alone in the park, experiencing food poisoning; a woman having tonic-clonic seizures following head trauma; a diabetic backpacker in DKA who'd left his insulin at home; and a lightning strike on a member of the BAMRU rescue team.

Evacuating a Diabetic Patient in the Medical Olympics

In addition to each BAMRU member getting invaluable practice with patient care, patient packaging, and equipment handling, each group vastly improved in communication and teamwork over the day. The scenarios also prompted discussions on managing bystanders, interacting with minors, approaching potentially dangerous patients, and handling the incapacitation of a team member.

Overall, the BAMRU members present at the training had the chance to refresh their EMS skills, gain familiarity with BAMRU’s equipment, and experience how rescue teams might conduct patient care in the field. It’s safe to say that no matter the certification level, we all learned a ton!
On September 25, BAMRU of San Mateo County Sheriff's Office received word of an ongoing search for 72 year old missing hunter in the Mendocino national forest area in rugged terrain above 5,500’. Gene Penaflor had disappeared during a hunting trip the day before. He and his partner agreed to meet for lunch and the had split up to walk down two different ridges. Unfortunately, Gene never met his partner, and was reported missing later that day. Seven members of BAMRU/SMCSO responded to the call out, and met with Mendocino county search and rescue at 8:30am on Thursday the 26th. The search continued until Saturday, with 13 BAMRU/SMCSO members attending on Friday, and a total of 14 on Saturday.
Accessing the site was quite challenging: it required a multi-hour drive on dirt roads from Ukiah following the drive up from the bay area. Thankfully our hosts were incredibly helpful, which made the process substantially easier.

Once on scene BAMRU/SMCSO was honored to be able to help coordinate a significant part of the effort to locate Mr. Penaflor, including analyzing the map of the area and using information from Mr. Penaflor's hunting partner to plan the search assignments for the weekend. The terrain was very rugged but the search teams all worked together seamlessly to cover a very large area over the course of the four day search, we were very grateful for the incredible professionalism and hard work of all of the teams involved. With great sadness we were all forced to leave on Saturday night by an incoming bad weather front and a total absence of clues. We always hate leaving searches without any result, and so an early end to the search was very hard on all of the teams involved.

Thankfully, two weeks later on Saturday October 12th, a full 18 days after Gene Penaflor went missing, BAMRU/SMCSO was invited back to Mendocino to assist with a follow up search. Eight BAMRU/SMCSO members were able to attend, although none of us expected the result that followed. At 08:30am Gene Penaflor, still alive and sheltering near a creek not far from where he fell, was able to get the attention of a group of hunters passing near by. When the hunters found him, he reported that he had not been able to eat for three days and was incredibly weak. They were able to use their sweaters to make a stretcher and carry him to a nearby clearing. They also called 911, and we were able to use their GPS coordinates to locate them, and find Gene.

The members of BAMRU/SMCSO were privileged to be able to assist with the care and extrication of Mr. Penaflor. We are very grateful to the hunters who found him for their assistance in the hauling of the stretcher to the helicopter landing zone, where Mr. Penaflor could be air-lifted to Ukiah Valley Medical Center. We are also incredibly grateful to all of the other search teams involved, their professionalism and expertise was instrumental to the success of this recovery. Mr. Penaflor was treated for minor injuries and released to his family the next day.

It is truly amazing that Gene Penaflor was able to survive for so long alone in the wilderness. He reported that he was able to shoot squirrels and other small game, and that he cooked algae from the nearby stream to stay alive. To stay warm he insulated himself with packed leaves and grasses and made a small fire. When it rained or snowed he crawled under a large log to keep dry.

Off to the Hospital

An important element of this story is that during the initial four day search Mr. Penaflor used his camp fire to burn wet leaves and produce smoke in an effort to signal the CHP helicopter that was flying overhead assisting with the search. He did this during two full days of the search, but the helicopter was unable to see him. Members of the public are often unaware of how incredibly difficult it is to see small objects - such as people or campfires - from a helicopter flying over an expansive and thickly forested landscape. In this case, the wind was strong enough to blow away most of the smoke, and the crew of the helicopter could see nothing.

We are incredibly pleased with the outcome of this search, and very happy that Mr. Penaflor is out of the hospital and doing well now. The members of BAMRU/SMCSO were truly privileged to be able to assist with the care and extrication of Mr. Penaflor, and we hope that other searches can all have such a happy outcome, although preferably with much less time in between the disappearance and the recovery.

Thanks to Lucas Marciniak and Ben Yaffe for sharing the experience via this write up:

On Saturday June 29th, BAMRU staffed the medical checkpoint at mile 85 of the Western States Endurance Race. This 100-mile ultra-marathon takes runners from Squaw Valley to Auburn, California on a grueling trail of steep switchbacks, swift-water river crossings, and mountain passes; this year with a record temp of 102° F.

For the 5th year running, BAMRU supported the event with technical member and emergency RN Lucas Marciniak as the medical captain for the aid station, as well as a team who brought a variety of experience levels. Regardless of medical background, teamwork is crucial. The hours are long, and as the night goes on the medical tent can gets increasingly intense. As each runner reaches mile 85 of the race, the team assess them, paying close attention to their mental status and weight compared to their starting weight (as an indication of fluid status). Along with a host of other ailments, the team provided extensive blister care and addressed dehydration, hyponatremia, hypoglycemia, muscle/skeletal injuries, and exhaustion. With the race having their own ALS protocols, we were able to provide a broad range of interventions.

This is a perfect event for BAMRU, as our medical, rescue, and communications are put to good use.Everyone on the team has experience in emergency settings and knows how to keep their cool under pressure and with limited sleep. BAMRU staffs the aid station with experienced/professional medical providers but also leverages the event to give the EMTs and WFRs on the team who don’t work in the medical field an opportunity to get an incredible amount of hands-on experience. Looking forward to 2014!

Since March, BAMRU has participated in four search operations. Most recently, we participated in the search for Mikaela Lynch in Clearlake which sadly, had a tragic outcome

In addition to the searches, BAMRU also completed the Mountain Rescue Association's snow and ice re-accreditation, ran two extensive trainings geared towards our newest team members and a Navigation and Tracking training.
Nestled in the San Juans, just getting there in winter can be an adventure, but once you arrive you are guaranteed a good time. Outdoor enthusiasts from all over come to watch and participate in some great ice climbing at the Ouray ice park and then recover from bad cases of the screaming barfies at the Ouray Brewery. This year, once again, a group of eager BAMRUvians attended the ice fest to work on their ice climbing skills and rub shoulders with Conrad Anker.

If you're thinking about going in 2014, or would like to try your hand at ice climbing (or other adventures) check out San Juan Mountain Guides, a guiding company run by a classmate of mine on a NOLS India Mountaineering course in 1999! In the Bay Area you can hook up with several guides in the Sierras. SMI, SMC, SMG or the AAI. Thanks to our recruiting officer, Rachel Farrand, we had over 30 guests in attendance! We are all looking forward to getting to know the 2013 cohort.

Other highlights of the meeting included the first promotions of the year:

BAMRU welcomed two new trainees to the team. Craig Taylor and Chris Nielsen. Craig brings his extensive outdoor experience to the team, including time spent on Denali. Chris has a background as wild-land firefighter and an EMT.
Chris Kantarjiev, BAMRU's training officer, was promoted to Technical Member which means that he has completed all of the skills in the three disciplines of search skills, technical rock, and snow and ice. As we forge ahead into 2013 we'd like to take a moment to reflect on 2012.

We made some great headway in fundraising and towards our goal of buying a new truck, but we still have a ways to go!! You can donate here: http://www.bamru.org/donate

In 2012 we welcomed seven new trainees to the team, logged 2,305 hours in the field responding to 29 callouts, 6,435 hours on trainings, and 884 hours at meetings. We received and responded to the 30th callout of the year on New Year's Eve.

In total, BAMRU logged 10,370.5 volunteer hours. That's 10,370 hours spent away from home, families, and warm beds doing a job that we love to do and 10,370 hours supporting each other through difficult searches, brainstorming sessions, long trainings and some good times thrown in for good measure.

While every member of our team is extremely valued, every year a handful are recognized for their outstanding service. This year BAMRU recognized the following members:

Member of the year: Chris Kantarjiev

The annual Member of the Year award is presented to the BAMRU member who through actions, attitude, creativity, and commitment provides the greatest support and enhancement to BAMRU's ability to perform its public-service mission. This year, we highlight the member who devised and instituted a new training philosophy focused on the needs of trainee members to complete their certifications; an innovative training portfolio that creates more opportunity for senior members to enhance their skills; the "endorsement" mechanism to recognize progress towards the rank of rescue member; a reworked schedule; and inspiring a culture of safety, achievement, and fun.

It's hard to sum up what Chris has done for our team. His title is "Training Officer", but he's also a mentor, an organizer, and someone who has his finger on the pulse of the team and its members. This year he was promoted to technical member, logged a total of 516 hours working for the team, and that's not including all of the hours spent being responsive to endless emails and questions from those of us looking for guidance. The entire team is eternally grateful for his service.

Searcher of the year: Kito Berg-Taylor

The annual Searcher of the Year award is presented to the BAMRU member who makes the greatest direct contribution to BAMRU's search and rescue operations. It is based on attendance at call-outs, participation in overnight and multi-day operations, and commitment in the field.

In 2012 it was notable that half a dozen BAMRU member logged more that 125 hours in SAR operations. However, one individual stood out. By participating in 18 search and rescue operations, including several multi-day commitments, with a distinctive combination of energy, determination, and good cheer.

Kito is the type of searcher that seems to never tire. Somehow he manages to get through the toughest assignments on barely any sleep and still be a pillar of strength for his teammates. Kito has just recently deployed for boot camp and will begin training to become a field medic for the U.S. Army. We wish Kito all the best on his new path and a safe return home.

Recognition for Service:
For those of you who love to go out and play, camp, hike, or ski in the white stuff, here is a great write-up by BAMRU's Alex Grishaver on how to help get spotted should you loose your direction crossing snowy terrain:

Ever wonder what a helicopter pilot sees while flying over a wintry wilderness area? On a recent Tahoe search, we got some compelling visual evidence of what's easy and difficult to see from the air -- with important lessons for all you outdoorsy folk.

These shots were taken from the air by a local deputy in the South Lake Tahoe area (specifically, near Upper Velmer Lake), where we had, thankfully, just made contact with a lone hiker who'd been pinned down in the first storm of the season. The helicopter was probably between 200-300' above the ground. What do you see in this first photo?

Well, hopefully you see… trees and snow, of course. A stream. Some very high-contrast shadows. And tracks! You may spot some people (or you may start to infer where they are based on the location of tracks). But you have to admit, people are pretty difficult to make out here. Even in when a helicopter is hovering in a stationary position, there's plenty to distract: vibrations; glare; reflections; etc.

Here’s another photo taken a minute later:

In fact, there are 7 other rescuers behind a cluster of trees, chatting with the hiker -- who was in fine condition, but who had been tent-bound for 5 days and was facing, at best, a 10-mile slog through 4-foot snow drifts in trail-runners if we hadn't found him. In this particular search, crews on the ground made contact with the hiker, who saw the helicopter drop them on a ridge and then used a whistle to alert us. The helicopter crew didn't actually see the hiker until after we'd made contact.

Yes, the photos aren't of the highest resolution. But the deputy who snapped these shots attested to the great difficulty of seeing us, only a few hundred feet below him. And the helicopter crew has way more visual information to process than what’s captured within the small “window” of these photos.

It's hard to see people from the air. However, tracks stand out well on fresh snow, and stomping a message or pattern is surprisingly effective, quick and easy. If possible, you should still try to attract attention with bright, geometric patterns in a clearing. High-contrast patterns also work in other environments: spreading lightly colored gear against a dark background (or vice versa) can assist you in getting attention when you need it.

Have fun, and stay safe!
